pietas

September 15, 2008

If you were writing a book about Christian doctrine, where would you start? Calvin starts here: pietas

I call “piety” that reverence joined with love of God which the knowledge of His benefits induces.

For Calvin, we cannot apprehend God without rendering some honor to him. We can’t know Him as Governor and not trust such a guide and protector; we can’t know Him as the Author of every good and not seek all help from Him; we can’t know Him as Good and Merciful and not trust that every situation is in His hands for our good; we can’t know him as Righteous Judge and not have a holy fear so as to not provoke Him .The knowledge of God begins with piety.
