Martin Luther on Preaching (and evangelism)

January 22, 2009

I listened to a sermon by Martin Luther while running today. The sermon was based on the texts in John, “The sheep hear my voice and follow me,” and in Isaiah, “my word will not return to me void”. Taking these two thoughts together reminds us what we are to look for and evaluate in our shepherds / teachers (a job of every believer!): a person who knows their authority extends only as far as the Word in their mouths, and their only power lies, not in coercion, pressure, or force, but in that very Word which God will use to accomplish His purpose.

It occurred to me that the same thought applies in thinking about our own opportunities in evangelism.

[He’s still instructing the Lord’s church after 500 years!]
