God’s Providence 5 : : from John Calvin

February 17, 2009

Not like some deists or sophists does the Bible paint a picture of God who governs the universe by some sort of ambiguous “out there” motion. His hand is directly and actively involved in every single detail of his creation. Here’s a smattering of God’s involvement:

he waters the earth with dew and rain (Lev 26:3-4, Deut 11:13-14)
he hardens the ground when displeased (Lev 26:19)
he blights the ground and crops (Deut 28:22)
he sends hail and storm as vengeance (Isa 28:2, Hag 2:18)
he gives ravens their food (Ps 146:9)
he directs the steps of man (Jer 10:23, Prov 20:24)
he prompts their thoughts and speech (Prov 16:1, 9)
he determines lots that are cast (Prov 16:33)
he is the direct cause of “fortune” or “fate” (Ps 75:6-7)
he makes the clouds and winds his servants and messengers (Ps 104:3-4)
he feeds man (Isa 3:1, Mt 6:11, Ps 136:25)
he receives the prayer of the righteous (Ps 34:15)
he destroys the impious (Ps 34:16)
–John Calvin, p203-7, The Institutes

God is directly and actively the cause of every event and every detail that takes place under the sun. Is that your God?
